What are your plans for computer security this summer? Here are ours.

Hello again, Richard Rossbauer here with some useful stuff for protecting your computer- and family

Summer is officially here - with plans for family activities and vacations well under way.

However, the cyber thieves and criminal hackers aren't going on vacation. They're waiting for us to drop our guards and allow them to infiltrate our computers for nefarious deeds and possibly activate viruses and worms already planted by them and hidden in our computers -

 - like the Conficker virus, which is still a very real threat.

By some estimates, it's lying dormant on over 10 million computers, The biggest problem with this virus is that it has not been activated yet.

It's believed by some experts to be waiting for 'stage two' commands to allow it to do criminal things like copying personal information from your computer, or even disabling your computer and demanding a ransom to re-activate it.

Conficker isn't the only threat. Visit the "Virus Removal Advice" webpage at our Firewalls and Virus Protection website for the latest Security Advisories on current spyware, Trojans, viruses, and worm threats - with updates and removal advice from McAfee, symantec, Panda, and TrendMicro.

And don't be trapped by Rogue Anti-virus software like
'XP Deluxe Protector'

It is a new rogue application that will show false scanning results to entice users to purchase their software. XP Deluxe Protector will also “hijack” Windows Security Center and attempt to make users pay by using this text:

“Windows Security center reports that XP Deluxe Protector is inable.
Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click Recommendations for the suggested actions.
Your system might be at risk now.”

If this shows up on your computer DO NOT CLICK on it!

Because it's already on your computer, you'll need an advanced level of spyware detection and removal software to get rid of it.

(Did you notice the misspelling? Typical of many of the Rogue and Phishing
attempts.)
