The width of the pop tent trailer expands as well as the length. Normal widths for unerected tent trailers range from six to nine feet. This is so that the tent trailer can be towed on public roads. When you pop open the tent trailer, however, there may be slide outs that include extra sleeping or storage space.

Tent trailers provide features not found in tents. They can sleep from four to ten people, depending on the model and style rented. Essentially tents with wheels, tent trailers usually feature a small indoor kitchen with a two to three burner propane stove, a sink with running cold water, and sometimes a portable electric refrigerator. Of course, these features require you to camp at a camping park that provides electricity, water, and propane outlets at each berth.

If you rent a pop up, practice with it before you hit the road. Learn how to open and fully expand the pop up tent and any extensions. Understand how to connect the utilities. The sink provides cold water only, but this is not a problem if you have a camp stove or fire for heating cooking water. There are no shower or toiler facilities inside the tent trailer, although more expensive models now offer such features.

Pop up trailers don't require a large truck or sport utility vehicle to tow them. A passenger car can do it. If your car does not have a trailer hitch, you can usually rent one from the tent camper company. Once the tent trailer is attached, practice driving with it, especially backwards. The campsite will probably require you to back into your assigned slot so that the utilities can be attached.
