But, what can you do right now if you haven't installed your firewall and anti-virus programs yet? Here are a few suggestions: Get McAfee'e Search and Repair 'Stinger' program from their site. It's free, will fit easily on one floppy, can be used over and over again to check all of the computers you use, even if they aren't connected to the internet. The current edition checks for 31 viruses, trojans and worms. Get it from McAfee Stinger Remember please, this checks after-the-fact and not as you are using the internet. It is not a Firewall nor an On-Line virus checker. However, you can download a free ZoneAlarm Company Firewall program from c|net, or try this tiny URL: http://tinyurl.com/rzc8 There are some other major points to consider as you work to increase your security. One very important issue is to have a "Disaster Plan". You may never need it, but from experience, I can tell you that it's an absolutely frustrating experience to take all of the precautions, have all of the software protection tools, and still suffer a shut-down due to a virus. How did it get in, you ask?. So did we and the best that we can determine is that we were infected earlier through a Trojan Horse with a timed actuation event. Here are some things to consider as part of your "Disaster Plan": Organize all of your Program CD's and list them with their passwords in a separate off-line book. Keep that book in a very safe place. Make sure that you have the authentication or serial number codes for your software. You'll need them when you reload/restore the programs. Sometimes, you can actually clean out the viruses without having to wipe your harddrive. There are tools for this posted in our "What's a Firewall" report. Check them out in the 'Help from symantec' columns. If you have to wipe your "C" drive and re-install your Operating System, having a backup image of your system on an external harddrive (saved from before the virus attack) will be a great timesaver. Back up regularly, even keep the harddrive disconnected until you make the backup image. No doubt, you'll lose most of your current email files. Again, there are backup tools to minimize these loses.Do a Google search. Use the Google Search Box on the Library Page at RichardPresents.com. Search for "email backup" You'll find them. But, if it's not practical to duplicate your harddrive, (even using an external harddrive) it would be good insurance to save you vital files to a ZIP Disk or CD. (Floppies are usually just too small). Our policy is to be suspicious of strange email messages, expect the worst, delete unless we know the source.... and sometimes this doesn't even work. In future discussions, we'll talk more about Disaster Planning, Remote (Server Side) backup, current virus updates, and new security tools.
